Chapter Seventeen

The quiet hum of her Brooklyn apartment was interrupted by a buzz. She glanced at the door intercom with a smile as she knew exactly who it would be before she buzzed the visitor in.

"Movies and men, Katie!" Juno's voice announced as she breezed past Katie and into the room, her pixie-like features set in an expression of mock-seriousness. "The two 'M's that make the world go round. Oh! Hi, Aunt Zorah!"

“Hello, dear,” Zorah said with an understanding smile.

"Or send it spiraling out of control," Katie quipped, her smile reaching her eyes as she embraced her friend.

"Always with the drama," Juno teased. Her fingers danced across the laptop resting on the coffee table, already alight with curiosity.

Katie settled beside her, her mind turned over the mysteries they were tangled up in. She let out a slow breath to give herself a rest for now. Zorah had moved into the armchair, and was sipping her tea with one sparkly green eye on the girls.

"Speaking of spirals," Zorah chimed in, her voice carrying the weight of cryptic wisdom, "the dance of courtship is much like a corkscrew, it digs deep but can uncork either jubilation or despair."

Katie raised her eyebrows as she fought a grin. “A wine metaphor? Honestly?”

“Wine and magic, my darlings. They can go hand in hand. There is nothing like a chilled wine while making a magic brew.” Zorah pretended to stir a pot as she collected laughter from the girls.

Juno played around with Katie’s laptop as the trio shared laughter, light topics to balance the mood that had been dampened by Kensington’s murder. Kate was thankful to be able to have a little downtime and not think about the investigation, but that was instantly interrupted when Juno found Katie’s list of suspects. Juno reviewed the list and stopped at Emily Sanders, Kensington’s younger ex-wife.

"Ya know, I read somewhere that she signed a prenup." Her dark eyes reflected the glow of the screen as she navigated through search results. "If she was just after his money, why would she do that?"

"Maybe she believed in happily ever after," Katie mused aloud, her gaze distant.

"More like she believed in her husband's fortune lasting forever or that her lawyer could get her out of it." Juno countered as she clicked through pages with the expertise of a seasoned detective. "Look here. I hacked into a few places…"

Katie leaned in, her pulse quickened. “You are a wizard!”

On the screen was evidence of Emily's financial struggles: overdue bills, a maxed-out credit line, desperate email inquiries to loan sharks. Desperate attempts at taking her former husband to court to get the pre-nup invalidated.

"Was she desperate enough for murder?" Katie pondered, her gut twisting uncomfortably. She remembered Emily's tense smile and how her eyes darted away from direct questions.

"Whoever said love doesn’t cost a thing clearly didn’t know about Emily," Juno quipped dryly. "She was an idiot for signing a prenup."

"Love blinds us to many things," Zorah said, her voice drifting over from the chair. "But desperation can sharpen the senses and the claws.
